The Thunder DownUnder

The just concluded 4 Test Match Cricket series between hosts Australia and India was remarkable on several fronts and demands some serious debate. If you are a cricket statistician or are remotely interested in the Number Games, this series was much above being called "Astounding". It was neither "Brilliant" nor "One-sided" but definitely something to remember for a long time to come. There were remarkable changes to both the Australian and Indian cricket, both for good and bad. The Cricket was at its mysterious best, if not near its performance peak, and not even once there was any foregone conclusion to be made. The events, both on and off the fields, ensured that the Cricket World was never in a position to take their eyes and ears away from this series.

Here are some of the statistical wonders from that series.
  1. 5879 The total number of runs scored in the series, by both the teams. This is the highest number in terms of total number of runs scored in any series of 4 or lesser Test matches. The second-most runs (5651) also came in a series between India and Australia, the 2003-04 Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
  2. There has been only one instance of two batsmen scoring four or more hundreds in a single Test series. Virat Kohli and Steven Smith created history when they scored four hundreds each during the 2014/15 Border-Gavaskar Trophy played in Australia.
  3. 769 Runs scored by Steven Smith in this series, the most ever in a series of four or fewer matches. There have been two instances of batsmen scoring more runs when they have played only four matches in a five-match series - Sunil Gavaskar (774, versus West Indies, 1971) and Viv Richards (829, versus England, 1976).
  4. 692 Runs scored by Virat Kohli this series, the most by an Indian batsman in Australia and the third-most by an Indian batsman in any series. Sunil Gavaskar aggregated 700-plus in a series on two occasions, in 1971 and 1978-79, both times against West Indies.
  5. 482 Runs scored by M Vijay this series, the most by an Indian opener in Australia and the third-most by an Indian opener in any away series. Gavaskar has aggregated more on two occasions: 542 against England in 1979 and 774 against West Indies in 1971.
  6. 8 Number of times that the teams have posted a 400-plus score during this series, the most ever in a Test series. There have been seven previous instances of teams making seven 400-plus scores in a series.
  7. 0 Number of previous instances where both teams have gone past 400 in the first innings of each Test in a series of three or more Tests. Both Australia and India have each posted 400-plus scores in the first innings of every Test this series, with Australia going past 500 on each occasion.
  8. 6 Number of consecutive 50-plus scores for Chris Rogers, the most by an Australian. Eight other Australian batsmen have made six 50-plus scores as well - Jack Ryder, Doug Walters, Greg Chappell, Allan Border, Mark Taylor, Michael Hussey, Phil Jaques and David Warner.
  9. 15 Umesh Yadav's economy rate during Australia's second innings, the worst in Tests for a player who has bowled three or more overs in an innings. He returned figures of 0 for 45 from three overs.
  10. 24 Number of instances this series of a bowler conceding 100-plus runs in innings, the most ever in a Test series. Nathan Lyon has six such innings, the most, while Ashwin has four.

Don’t be a Woman in India

In January reports poured in from Hyderabad stating that uteruses had been removed from the body of many women under the age of 30 in the name of the Arogyashri Scheme. These hysterectomy operations have deprived these women of chances to bear children. The government prescribed that uterus could be removed in case of women aged 30- under the scheme only if they suffered from multiple fibroids, carcinoma in situ, carcinoma cervix stage I and II, ovarian carcinoma. Alas! The poor women from the villages have been lured into agreeing to get their uteruses removed in the guise of instilling the fear that they will die if uteruses were not removed. Doctors who did this heinous crime had only pecuniary benefits in mind.

Less than 3 months later, doctors in Dausa, Rajasthan, repeated the act. This time around the scheme is named Janani Suraksha Yojana and aims to help the expectant mothers. 226 women were duped in the pretext of curing non-existent diseases. No one takes notice unless somebody breaks the news in Media. This is the worst kind of corruption that can happen. A woman unable to bear a child will always struggle to come to terms with her existence. More so in utilitarian India. A woman is just another piece of utility for child-bearing, physical pleasures and performing a host of menial duties. Everybody tries to take advantage of these poor creatures. Doctors have shown they are not far behind and they have a much neater way to escape the hands of the law.

A young athlete gets thrown off the train in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh. You may say the intention behind the attack on Arunima Sinha was robbery and any male could also have suffered the same fate. But, being a woman she was a very soft target with hardly any physical resistance and support from the onlookers. She may get a Jaipur Foot and Railways may have offered her a job. But will there be any other such hue and cry for a normal woman thrown off the train or abused and humiliated in any other way in any part of the country? Stats reveal that the answer is a big NO. We will continue to display some bland emotions once the incident gets reported in the media or reaches our ears/eyes through some other means. We will think strongly about it and that will be the end of it all.

Places rife with communal or sectarian conflicts are the safest haven for the crimes against women. Jammu & Kashmir is a prime example. The murder of 40 year-old Hasina Begum, a Panchayat election candidate in the Badgam district, by the Ultras suggests that women are supposed to stay in subservience of men and the moment they try and break-free from the shackles, they should be punished, often the corporal punishment.

Mumbai saw the suicide of a teenager arising out of her conscience not feeling good after she was raped by her father’s ex-employer for over a week in order to revenge the father’s escape from the debt trap set by the ex-employer. Any body does anything and the grouse is borne by the women belonging to either sides. This happens day in and day out all over India.

Women in our society will have to wait till eternity to get the respect they deserve. The only women we care as individuals are those who are in direct and indirect relation to us. Others are Social and Governmental responsibilities. My apologies and big shame-laden head bow to all the women in India. Some day you may feel owned and secure.

Wildlife Sanctuary, National Park & Zoo

A Wildlife Sanctuary is a reserved area where wild animals are either born or brought from outside and bred with care and protection for rest of their lives. The residents animals are not traded and do not participate in any scientific study. Utmost planning and execution is done to make sure that they get as natural an environment as is feasible.

Unlike a zoo, general public does not have unescorted access to a wildlife sanctuary. Any human interaction with the animals goes through a thorough systematic check before it is allowed. The welfare of the animals is never undermined irrespective of the action taken.

These sanctuaries are mostly notified and owned by the government and may or may not span on to the private land.

A National Park is another area which is either declared or owned by a government and set aside for recreation of humans, protection and upkeep of animals and Nature. No Public or Private Development is allowed inside a national park. These parks are often created through a legislation with a general area of more than 1000 hectares. Sufficient funding and resources are provided to run the facility at all times.

Scientific studies can be carried out at a National Park including the experimental study of both animals and plants. General Public is granted access under special conditions for inspirational, recreative, educative and cultural purposes. Any activity that can harm the things inside the park, living and non-living alike, is strictly prohibited.

In India, Wildlife Sanctuaries and National Parks are regulated by the
Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.

A zoo (short form of Zoological Garden) is a public or private park where animals are kept for exhibition and study. The mix of animals can usually be both wild and domestic with a dominance of wild ones.

National Zoo Policy regulates zoos on India. Central Zoo Authority <http://www.cza.nic.in/> supervises the operations of all zoos in India.

Following is the list of Wildlife Sanctuaries and National Parks in India.
